Won't Connect on port 6668

Reported by: Flish Owned by: FlashIT
Priority: blocker Version: 0.5
Keywords: port, 6668, non-standard, default, connection, connect, timeout Cc: andy@…

Description

Hi, just downloaded and having issues connecting to a server running on port 6668. I run something called bitlbee (msn/icq etc proxy through an ircd), which is in effect an irc channel. It works a treat using various irc clients, and rooms does connect to the ircd control channel which runs on the standard port of 6667, however the actual bitlbee channel is on 6668 and Rooms fails to connect.

Have tried over wifi and over 3g and same result. Over 3G I can see a connection come into the firewall (port forwards to internal box), but the session state never completes. Obviously over the lan it's a direct connection over wifi, but it doesn't. Somewhere there is something different in the connection attempt between 6667 and 6668. Again irssi and colloquy clients all connect fine (internal and external) with nothing unusual changed other than the port number.

If you need any more info let me know, thanks

Hi Flish,

i dont know much about BitlBee? atm, but i saw on their page a comment that one of the public servers provides SSL on this port (6668).
If this is also the fact for your server, then this will be fixed in the upcoming release which will provide SSL support.

If no SSL is used, then we have to dig a little deeper.
You know some example connections i could use to try this out? Since using the public servers work fine here atm. (using the upcoming version already)

Am pretty sure (but can't confirm atm) that I didn't specifically set up SSL, and certainly my Colloquy config has the SSL port *unticked*, literally changed 6667 to 6668 on the config. If it helps I can let you know the public hostname the server can be contacted on, but would rather not post here (security by obscurity :-)), drop me an email if needed.

Yea think it would be helpful trying with your server. Since i now tried these public servers @ 6667 & 6668 without SSL and the one which provides SSL on 6668... All worked fine so far :-/

Heres the mailaddy: rooms@…

Hostname sent by mail seperately, have had time to sit in front of the box and refresh myself, and basically we have bitlbee running on port 6667 (no ssl) but that can only be connected to by localhost. Also on same box we have irssi running as a proxy, that connects to bitlbee and logs in as me, it then listens on 6668 (again no ssl) which is where the rest of the world connects. Concept being that I can connect from one (or more) IRC clients at same time and seen same thing.

So, am guessing it's a Rooms / irssi issue.

Scratch that, found the problem, and FAQ tells me it'll be solved in next release, need a server password, thought I'd disabled that, but apparently not, so am guessing that explains the connect on 6668 and time out, it's waiting for Rooms to auth, and obviously it isn't. Will wait on next release, do we have an eta btw?

Thx for the further testing!
(am a bit confused if you already sent the mail with the hostname thought?! because i didnt get one, but since it seems to be working with the update, thats no problem)

Hope the 0.6.x fixes this, its in review by apple since the last saturday (30.) - and apple currently gives no information about the eta :-(
